A five minute brake check before a long trip

What to look and listen for before the Abuja road or a trip home for the holidays.

01

Listen

Squealing or grinding when you brake means worn pads. A clicking or knocking over bumps points to suspension.

02

Feel

A pedal that feels soft, or a car that pulls to one side when braking, needs checking before you travel.

03

Look at the fluid

Brake fluid should sit between the minimum and maximum marks and look clear, not dark brown.

04

Look through the wheel

On many cars you can see the pad through the wheel spokes. Less than 3 mm of material means it is time.
