Five money habits our longest members share

Plain lessons from people who have saved with us for twenty years or more.

1. Pay yourself first

Every long standing member we asked said the same: the saving leaves before the salary is spent. Salary deduction does that for you.

2. Borrow for things that last

School fees, a car for work, a plot of land. Our longest members rarely borrowed for parties, and when they did, they used festive savings instead.

I treat my Unity saving like rent. It is not optional.

3. Keep loans under a third

The one third rule is in our bylaws for a reason. Members who kept repayments under a third of their pay never missed one.

4. Guarantee carefully

Only stand for people whose habits you know. A guarantee is a promise with your own savings.

5. Come to the AGM

  • You hear the numbers yourself
  • You vote on the rates you pay
  • You meet the people you are saving with
See what a small habit becomes in the savings calculator.
