Learning a language at forty, and why it is easier than you think

Adults learn differently from children, not worse. Here is what the research and our own classrooms say about starting late.

The myth of the young brain

Children pick up accents easily, but adults learn grammar and vocabulary faster in the early months. You already know how language works; you are mapping a new one onto it.

Use what you already have

If you speak English and Ibibio, you already juggle two systems. Many of our adult French students find their Nigerian Pidgin and English help them guess new words faster than they expect.

The fastest learners are the ones who make the most mistakes out loud.

Little and often

Twenty minutes a day beats three hours on Saturday. The brain consolidates memory overnight; daily contact gives it something to work on.

Speak before you are ready

Adults wait to be perfect. Do not. The fastest learners in our classes are the ones who make the most mistakes out loud, early.

Make it useful

Learn the French for your work first: the forms, the phone calls, the market. Motivation follows usefulness.

Questions
Is it too late to start at 50?

No. Our oldest A1 French student this year is 63, and she is the most consistent in her class.

How many hours a week do I need?

Four hours of class plus twenty minutes a day at home moves most adults up one level in about three months.

Can I start mid-term?

Yes, at most levels, after a placement test and speaking check.
