Running an electric car in Uyo, honestly

We have delivered 64 electric cars in Akwa Ibom. Here is what their owners have taught us about charging, heat and range.

Charging at home is the whole story

Nine in ten owners charge at home overnight. A 7 kW wall charger fills a Lumen from 20% to 80% in about six hours. With a 5 kVA solar inverter, most owners charge on sunshine and battery storage on all but the cloudiest rainy-season weeks.

The grid is not the problem people think

The car does not need power all night, it needs about six hours. Owners set the car to charge when grid power is most likely, and the inverter covers the gaps.

Heat and the battery

The Lumen cools its battery with liquid, so a day parked in the sun does no harm. Range drops by about 8% with the air conditioning running hard, which is why we quote a real-road figure of 455 km rather than the test figure.

Longer trips

Uyo to Calabar and back is possible on one charge with a little to spare. Uyo to Port Harcourt needs a top-up; we list the hotels that let you charge in the owner app.

What it costs to run

With solar, most owners spend almost nothing on energy. Servicing is about ₦120,000 a year with no oil to change, example rate.
