The rhythm

A Sunday at the ground

  1. I

    13:00, gates open

Lunch on the verandah, picnics on the lawn, ponies warming up behind the stables.

  2. II

    15:00, first chukka

Four or six chukkas of seven minutes, with ponies changed between each.

  3. III

    Half time, treading in

Everyone walks on to the field to press the divots back. It is tradition, and it is fun.

  4. IV

    17:30, prizes

The cup on the pavilion steps, then tea as the light goes gold.

Fixture questions

What if it rains

The season runs in the dry months, so it rarely does. If the ground is unsafe, the umpires delay or move the fixture and tickets carry over.

Can I bring a picnic

Yes, on the lawn enclosure. Please take rubbish home, and no glass near the boards.

Is there a dress code

Smart and comfortable on the lawn. Members’ pavilion: no shorts or sportswear. Flat shoes help for treading in.

Before you leave the room

The Coal City Open in January and the Hartwell Cup final in February have their own rooms.
