Keeping sliding windows smooth through harmattan

Harmattan dust is hard on sliding windows and doors. A few minutes a month keeps tracks clean, rollers quiet and seals working.

Why sliding tracks suffer

Fine harmattan dust settles in the bottom track and mixes with dew into a gritty paste. Rollers grind through it, wear faster, and start to stick. Brush seals clog and stop keeping dust out.

A monthly five-minute clean

Slide the sash fully open. Vacuum the track with a narrow nozzle, then wipe with a damp cloth. Slide it the other way and repeat. Never use oil, which turns dust into sludge; a dry silicone spray is fine.

Check the drainage holes

Small slots on the outside of the frame let rainwater out. In dry season they block with dust and then overflow in the first rains. Clear them with a thin wire in March.

When to call us

If a sash still drags after cleaning, a roller may be worn or out of adjustment. We replace rollers and brush seals on site, usually within an hour per window.
