What happens during an echo
An echocardiogram is a painless ultrasound scan of the heart. Here is what to expect, step by step.
What it shows
An echo shows the size of your heart’s chambers, how well it pumps, and how the valves open and close.
Before the scan
No fasting is needed for a resting echo. Wear a top you can easily remove, as you will change into a gown.
During the scan
You lie on your left side. The sonographer places gel and a small probe on your chest and takes pictures from several angles. It takes about 40 minutes.
Sounds you may hear
The machine can play the sound of blood flow. It is normal and can be loud.
Afterwards
A cardiologist reviews the images. Your doctor explains what they show and any next steps.
